PAU D’ ARCO - Pau d’ Arco The “Mother Tree” of Traditional Remedies for Strength and Vigor.  Tabebuia or Pau d’ Arco has a long and well-documented history of medicinal use by the tribes of the rainforest. The Guarani and Tupi Indians call the Tabebuia tree tajy, meaning “to have strength and vigor.”

Reported Benefits: reduces obesity, cuts your risk of type II diabetes, and coronary heart disease, astringent, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, laxative, analgesic, antioxidant, and anti-cancerous.

HOLY BASIL - has been revered for its medicinal value throughout India for thousands of years. Ayurvedic texts describe Holy Basil as a pillar of holistic herbal medicine and a goddess incarnated in plant form (the mother medicine of nature). Many traditional Hindus worship an alter bearing a Holy Basil plant that is placed in the courtyard of their home or in another prominent location. Today Holy Basil remains one of the most cherished of India’s sacred healing plants. The leaves smell of peppermint, cloves, licorice and/or lemon. There are three types of Tulsi sold by Mountain Rose Herbs: Krishna, Rama, and Vana. Rama and Krishna are of the same species. All varieties belong to the mint family and are cousins of sweet basil.

Krishna (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is known for its medicinal value and peppery crisp taste. The plant has dark green to purple leaves, stems, and blossoms. It is cultivated in the Indian plains, as well as private homes and gardens around India, and is named after the blue skinned God as the dark purple     leaves resemble this color.

Rama (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is known for its cooling and mellow flavor. The plant has green leaves, white-to-purplish blossoms, and a green or purplish stem. It is cultivated in the Indian plains, as well as private homes and gardens around India.

Vana (Ocimum sp.), aka. “forest type”, is known for its fragrance. The plant has green leaves and stem, with white blossoms. It is found in the Himalayas and plains of India. Grows wild in Asia and Africa and is used medicinally there as well.

Constituents:Eugenol, B-caryophyllene, sesquiterpenes, monoterpenes, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), carotene (vitamin A), calcium, iron, and selenium, as well as zinc, manganese, and sodium as trace elements.

OATSTRAW - Did You know…that calcium-rich oat straw has been shown to heal osteoporosis, mend bones, improve cognitive performance–and even enhance sexual performance? When oats are harvested before the grain matures, the green grass and tops are called oat straw (Avena sativa).  Many alternative health advisers recommend oat straw for its dramatic capacity to improve stimulation of the reproductive organs for both men and women…and consumer testimonials indicate this botanical can indeed work wonders in the bedroom.  But this calcium-rich herb has many other important healing properties, as well, from treating osteoporosis and osteopenia to reducing anxiety.  Oat Straw Stimulates Cell Growth and Builds Better Bones.   Research indicates that oat straw is an excellent defense against osteoporosis. Oat straw triggers the release of a “luteinizing” hormone, that release of the luteinizing hormone leads to an overall hormone surge that stimulates cell growth. He says that this ability to stimulate cell growth makes oat straw a great supplement for building bone strength.  Oat straw is also rich in calcium and other bone-bolstering minerals.

NETTLE LEAF - Nettles have been used for centuries as a medicine and also as a food. Cooked or sauteed nettle leaves have a similar taste to spinach and are found in many Indian and Nepalese dishes. Stinging nettle soup is also a common dish served in Northern and Eastern Europe.

Nettle Leaf Benefits - Nettles are also found in many tisanes, or herbal teas. In particular, nettle leaves are often found in teas that promote healthy pregnancy, as they are thought to provide many health benefits to both the expectant mother and her fetus. Many women drink nettle leaf tea late in their pregnancy to help prepare their bodies for labor.  Nettles have also been used to help combat common allergies such as hay fever. Studies have shown that nettles have antihistamine properties that may help reduce allergic symptoms such as sneezing and itching. Nettles may also help reduce certain skin inflammations such as eczema.  Nettle leaves are prized for their high concentration of calcium, chlorophyll, iron, zinc, chromium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, D, and K. Nettles leaves are also thought to have many beneficial anti-inflammatory properties. They are thought to help reduce inflammation in the urinary tract. Many people believe that nettles are a diuretic, helping to cleanse and improve bladder and kidney functions. Additionally, many men use nettle leaf to help reduce inflammation in the prostate.

HORSETAIL - Horsetail is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antioxidant, coagulant, demulcent, diuretic and astringent activity. Reportedly, it has been used in the treatment of a number of health conditions which include brittle bone, hair, teeth and nails, white spots on nails, gingivitis, tonsillitis, inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth, rheumatic disorders, edema, osteoarthritis, diabetes, acne, wounds, itchiness, rashes, burns, frostbite, chilblains, athlete's foot, cracked and tired feet, drawing out pus from boils and carbuncles, ulcers, fistulas, herpes simplex, dyspepsia (impaired digestion), gastrointestinal conditions, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, fever, malaria, bladder problems, urinary tract infection, bed wetting in children, kidney stones (nephrolithiasis), prostate problems, hemorrhoids, muscle cramps, tumors, broken bones, fractures, sprains, nose bleed and other heavy bleeding. Horsetail is also known to strengthen the body's immune system.

GYNOSTEMA - Gynostema or “Jiaogulan” is an adaptogenic herb. An adatpogen is a substance that brings you whole body back into balance. It also increases strength and stamina and protects the body and mind against stress, either mental or physical. It is especially helpful for the immune, digestive, nervous, reproductive and cardiovascular systems. It is a very potent health tonic. Saponins are what gives this powerful herb it’s ability as an adaptogen. It has the largest amount of saponins of any natural plant. There are over 80 of them contained in Gynostema. This is over four time the amount found in ginseng The saponins in Gynostemma are called “gypenosides”. These are similar to the ginsenosides in ginseng. Some of these saponins actually convert to ginsenosides when ingested.

GREEN TEA - Here’s a list of some of its amazing benefits — benefits that you may not have been aware of. Some of these benefits are still being debated, so please do your own research if you want to use green tea for medicinal purposes.

1.  Weight Loss. Green tea increases the metabolism. The polyphenol found in green tea works to intensify levels of fat oxidation and the rate at which your body turns food into calories.

2.  Diabetes. Green tea apparently helps regulate glucose levels slowing the rise of blood sugar after eating. This can prevent high insulin spikes and resulting fat storage.

3.  Heart Disease. Scientists think, green tea works on the lining of blood vessels, helping keep them stay relaxed and better able to withstand changes in blood pressure. It may also protect against the formation of clots, which are the primary cause of heart attacks.

4.  Esophageal Cancer. It can reduce the risk of esophageal cancer, but it is also widely thought to kill cancer cells in general without damaging the healthy tissue around them.

5.  Cholesterol. Green tea has been shown to reduce bad cholesterol in the blood and improves the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol.

6.  Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. It is said to delay the deterioration caused by Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Studies carried out on mice showed that green tea protected brain cells from dying and restored damaged brain cells.

7.  Tooth Decay. Studies suggests that the chemical antioxidant “catechin” in tea can destroy bacteria and viruses that cause throat infections, dental caries and other dental conditions

8.  Blood Pressure. Regular consumption of green tea is thought to reduce the risk of high blood pressure.

9.  Depression. Theanine is an amino acid naturally found in tea leaves. It is this substance that is thought to provide a relaxing and tranquilizing effect and be a great benefit to tea drinkers.

10.  Anti-viral and Anti-bacterial. Tea catechins are strong antibacterial and antiviral agents which make them effective for treating everything from influenza to cancer. In some studies green tea has been shown to inhibit the spread of many diseases.

11. Skincare. Green tea can apparently also help with wrinkles and the signs of aging, This is because of their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Both animal and human studies have demonstrated that green tea applied topically can reduce sun damage.
